Process of series 2.1 -2

From this initial piece, I tried to put other layout forms.

 After getting some feedback of this work from classmate, I changed the size of signs.

 I tried to make some frame to each illustration.

 In addition, I tried to put some details more.

or I changed the clear frame by using rectangle tool. 

but I was still not sure about it.

Test 1.

From this layout sketching, I developed it.

 First of all, I put guide layer.

 Then, put the illustrations that I made. 

I liked the changing font. It looks more emotional

However, It was still not satisfying.

Test 2.

I changed the area of main character and signs.

 I put real illustration that I did to simulate it. 

 and tried putting other effects.

It was not good. but I could develop layout differently.

 I could develop layout by changing the location again, but staying in the middle.

 In addition, I still use the concept of dashing with frames.

Finally, I got satisfied piece.

Process 2.1-1

To make First instruction, I used Photoshop for editing.
I started instruction version 2 first. Because it has only three cut, so i think it is more easier than first series.
I started from this storyboard.

I made new layer and put guideline of layout. Then, I made two do not sign on the top.

I sketched like the boy dash to you to make instruction more active. 

 make a position and fill in the icons.

 Draw the main character. I used hard texture brush to make different intensity. 

 I used three different brush for making a main character.

And adding dot pattern as illustrating water drops.  

lastly, I put the number and arrow to direct the way.

It was my first initial piece of instruction.
However, I am not sure about this piece.
therefore, I started to try use other layout design.

Major project #13 Study of layout

Study of Layout

It was initial sketch of a layout of my instruction.

 These two layout are for 'Why not' series no.2 .

another one was 'Why not' series no.1.

However, I still want to develop these layout form.
Therefore, I started look cartoon layout because instructional design came from cartoon style.

I found those images from Pinterest. comic layout looks more active and various.
I would like to try those example to my project.
Of course, I will develop the layout from those.

Major project #12 create the main character

Create the main character

To explain instruction without sentences, I need a main character for acting instead of me.
When I started thinking about the main character, IKEA illustration came out in my mind at first.
IKEA has made instruction using symbolic character and only black and white colour.
It looks very clear and informative way.

Ikea used a character that could not recognise gender.
However, I'd like to use both gender characters.
Here is my first idea of making the main character.

For the first series of 'Why not', I want to make a little naughty boy.
Because the instruction will be about breaking 'Do not' signs.

On the other hand, I tried to illustrate experimentator who wearing a jumpsuit to be active.
In addition, I draw an outline on only cloth.
I want to make the character different from normal instructions.

Then, I tried to put into a storyboard as an example.
But I am still not satisfied with this character. Therefore, I tried to develop another character.

This is my last character sketch. Finally, I create a boy character for 'Why Not' series.
After finished sketch of the character, I started using Photoshop to make it.
I used Illustrator too. Firstly, I used Illustration.

 I tried to practice the position of the character.

 By using the Photoshop, I tried different texture in the face. it was interesting. 

Moreover, I put various pattern on the trouser. 

 connect each part.

Finally, I got the main character for my instruction series.

I need to two main series of 'Why Not' instruction. 

Visual instructions are similar with cartoon style. 

I made 6 cuts storyboard for the first series of instruction.

I am looking into including 4 or 5 cuts of each piece in the first instruction.

the second one will be 3 cuts of each piece.

Major project #10 book research

Book research: The art of instructional design by Mijksenaar, P. and Westendorp, P.

I found this book in the library. it was just one book about instructional design.
I used this book for looking other examples of visual instruction and basic role of instructional design.

One of important thing in instructional design is readability.
Because the purpose of instruction is giving information.
so it has to be informative and clear. People do not want to spend a long time on reading instruction.
Therefore, visual instruction used to describe a concise expression and key point.
I needed that how other artists make instructions.

From this book, I looked various instruction styles.
Illustration usually used a simple bold outline and primary colours like red, yellow and blue.
There were strong illustrated instructions as well.

Among many examples, I found an interesting visual effect. As I did research about Roy Linchtenstein, I already interested in a coloured pattern in the shapes. Dot pattern usually has used when the colours used too much in the instructions. or when it comes to overlapping the area, dot pattern are used. I would like to add this kind of pattern in my instruction.

It shows that don't have the same style, do it with own style. I want to focus on illustration more than normal instruction design.  

Even though I don't make informative instruction, I should study the basic styles of instruction.
Because I have no doubts that it will be helpful my project in any way.

It was great chance to look at design examples and study more about instructional design. Also, It helps to look at layout styles.
